Personal Defense Weapons-PDW

Just what are these assault weapons?

If nothing else this should clearly demonstrate that the term assault weapon is a political term.

Department of Homeland Security buying 7,000 full auto assault rifles

According to an article by Mike Adams on Monday, the Department of Homeland Security is seeking to purchase 7,000 fully automatic rifles, which the Department is referring to as “personal defense weapons.”
The solicitation for the weapons reads: “The scope of this contract is to provide a total of up to 7,000 5.56x45mm North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) personal defense weapons (PDW) throughout the life of this contract to numerous Department of Homeland Security components.”
The solicitation continues that the guns should be select fire, so that they fire both semi-automatic and full auto (the true definition of an “assault rifle”). The rifles will also take so-called high capacity magazines, “capable of accepting all standard NATO STANAG 20 and 30 round M16 magazines (NSN 1005-00-921-5004) and Magpul 30 round PMAG (NSN 1005-01-576-5159). The magazine shall have a capacity to hold thirty (30) 5.56x45mm NATO rounds.”
Personal defense weapons, that works for me.
